Mecpower Solutions and Navitas Solar have announced a partnership to establish a 5 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility in Karjan, Gujarat, with operations expected to begin in the first quarter of FY28, according to a release issued on Wednesday.
Domestic manufacturing push for energy storage
The proposed facility is aimed at strengthening domestic energy storage manufacturing capabilities and supporting India's clean energy transition, according to the companies.
Ankit Singhania, Director at Navitas Solar, said that building domestic manufacturing capabilities in energy storage would be important for strengthening India's clean-energy supply chain and meeting the requirements of utility-scale storage projects.
Complementary strengths brought together
The plant will combine Mecpower Solutions' renewable energy project development, engineering and execution capabilities with Navitas Solar's manufacturing expertise. The companies said the collaboration builds on their existing business relationship across solar and renewable energy projects.
According to the companies, the facility is envisioned as a platform integrating manufacturing, project deployment and system integration. It will focus on developing scalable battery storage solutions for utility-scale, commercial and industrial renewable energy applications.
Output earmarked for company projects and rising storage demand
The facility's output is expected to support projects undertaken by both companies, including engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deployments and utility-scale renewable energy projects. It will also cater to the growing demand for energy storage solutions.
Setul Shah, Director at Mecpower Solutions, commented on the development: "Our proposed 5 GWh manufacturing facility in Karjan represents a strategic step towards strengthening our capabilities across the energy storage value chain." He added that integrating battery storage manufacturing with the company's EPC and independent power producer businesses would help develop scalable solutions for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
