ADS-TEC Energy PLC (NASDAQ: ADSE) said that the permitting authority has confirmed all application documents as complete for its planned battery energy storage power plant at the Pulverdingen substation; the building permit is expected shortly.
The facility is to be located in Markgröningen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of power output and 4 gigawatt hours (GWh) of storage capacity. ADS-TEC Energy states the plant is intended to become one of the largest battery storage systems in Europe, with grid connection targeted for 2029.
Output on the Scale of a Large Power Station
The planned dimensions are substantial. The company notes that one gigawatt roughly matches the output of a large coal-fired or nuclear power plant, or of 250 wind turbines. The battery power plant is designed to sustain this output for roughly four hours, which, per the company, corresponds to the daily electricity consumption of around 400,000 single-family homes or 800,000 apartments. Investment in such a facility typically ranges from the high hundreds of millions to around USD 1.11 billion, according to the announcement.
How the Plant Will Operate on the Grid
Battery storage power plants do not generate electricity; they make it available when needed, the company explains. The facility will absorb power when generation exceeds demand, for instance at midday when solar output peaks or during periods of strong wind, and release it within fractions of a second when supply tightens. In everyday operation, the plant is expected to run typically at partial load and adapt dynamically to grid requirements.
It will also stabilize grid frequency, absorb load peaks and can support grid restoration after a power outage. ADS-TEC Energy describes the underlying challenge as follows: surplus wind and solar power today often has to be curtailed or exported at negative prices, only for supply to fall short a few hours later when other power plants must step in. The storage system will shift that surplus into the hours when it is most needed. The company says the result is less strain on the grid, fewer interventions by grid operators and a more robust and affordable power supply in Baden-Württemberg and beyond.
Three Channels of Long-Term Value
From 2029 onwards, the facility has the potential to become a long-term value driver for ADS-TEC Energy in three ways: through the proprietary battery management technology deployed in the plant, through technical services over the plant's operating life, and through a continuing stake in the project company. Third-party market data cited in the announcement indicates that large-scale battery storage systems in Germany have recently achieved revenues of approximately USD 167,100 to 278,500 per megawatt per year from wholesale trading and balancing markets.
The company stresses that such revenues accrue at plant level and are shared among the owners of the project company, and that ADS-TEC Energy's share will depend on the outcome of the investor process, the final partnership structure and future market conditions. These figures are explicitly not a forecast and do not constitute financial guidance, according to the announcement.
Majority Stake Sale Planned with Long-Term Partnership
The investor process is described as well advanced. ADS-TEC Energy plans to sell a majority stake in the project company while remaining a long-term partner in the project.
In-House Technology and European Supply Chain
The project has been developed with European partners. Renowned German companies and leading corporations are ready to supply batteries, electrical switchgear, transformers and extra-high-voltage equipment. The batteries will run on ADS-TEC Energy's proprietary battery management systems, whose electronics and software the company has developed and deployed in-house for more than 15 years. According to the company, this reduces reliance on battery management suppliers, which are typically based in Asia, and supports local control over software, IT security and associated data.
CEO and founder Thomas Speidel placed the project in a broader strategic context. "A project of this size requires staying power. I am proud that we can build in Markgröningen, and above all of our team, which has spent years preparing this project. Energy is the foundation for everything we produce in Europe. Anyone who does not control the infrastructure for it gives up part of their ability to act," Speidel said.
He added that with its own technology and renowned European partners, the company is demonstrating that Europe can plan, build and operate critical energy infrastructure on this scale on its own. Speidel credited the local landowners, the local community, the public authorities and the state government, as well as the company's cooperation with the grid operator, for the fact that a storage power plant of this size and relevance can be built in Baden-Württemberg.
Public Interest and Storage Strategy Alignment
ADS-TEC Energy describes the project as a flagship from the region, for the region and far beyond. The company states that large-scale battery storage systems are in the overriding public interest and support the implementation of the German federal government's electricity storage strategy. The announcement also points to rising demand for flexibility as wind and solar generation expands, positioning storage as the backbone of a renewable grid.
The permitting progress, the targeted 2029 grid connection and the company's planned dual role as technology provider and continuing stakeholder frame what ADS-TEC Energy presents as a significant long-term commitment to the German and European energy storage market.
