Lithuania's Rietavas municipality is now home to a fully constructed 35 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), after MT Group finished every work package needed ahead of voltage energization. The final installed battery capacity stands at 150.45 MWh, and the facility was delivered under a USD 31.1 million contract with developer Pure Energy Solutions.
Full-scope delivery under a EUR 27.8 million contract
Acting as general contractor, MT Group carried the entire implementation cycle on its shoulders: system design, equipment procurement, construction and commissioning. The company reports that all construction activities required for energization are now complete, with the system ready for the next stage once voltage is applied.
A key technical element of the scheme is its connection to a 110 kV substation operated by Litgrid, Lithuania's electricity transmission system operator. The project's stated purpose is to strengthen the flexibility and reliability of the country's electricity system and to open the door for greater shares of renewable energy to be integrated into it.
Storage as a balancing tool
The Rietavas facility is designed to provide frequency management and balancing services, but only once the relevant technical and market requirements have been satisfied. As renewable generation expands, storage assets of this kind allow electricity produced at one moment to be fed back into the grid when demand calls for it, smoothing the mismatch between production and consumption.
Energy Vice-Minister Ignas Junevičius framed the development in national terms. Building local electricity generation, he said, is only part of the transformation of Lithuania's energy system; securing the capacity to balance that generation is equally essential. He argued that consumers across the country will feel the impact of the region's fastest-growing storage fleet through smaller price jumps and lower grid balancing costs, and described projects like the Rietavas battery as contributors to reliable electricity system operation across the Baltic region.
Local and developer reactions
For the host municipality, the project registers as a major infrastructure commitment. Rietavas mayor Antanas Černeckis called it a significant investment in the municipality's energy infrastructure, welcoming the arrival of modern storage solutions that matter for the reliability of Lithuania's entire electricity system. He also commended the cooperation between the project's developers and contractors in delivering advanced energy infrastructure locally.
Pure Energy Solutions chief executive Artūras Jacikas reflected on the journey from concept to completion. From the outset, he said, he understood the importance of finding the right people and dependable partners, a judgement he now sees vindicated. Standing at the site and watching the original idea turn into reality, he said, made him very happy.
The contractor's view
Mindaugas Zakaras, MT Group's chief executive, credited the completion to the joint work of his team and its partners. He emphasized that as general contractor the company owns responsibility for the whole project implementation cycle, from design and equipment supply through construction to commissioning, and expressed appreciation for the client's trust as well as pride in a team whose engineering experience makes projects of national energy importance possible. In his assessment, the battery park will allow electricity flows to be managed more flexibly and enable more renewable energy to come onto the system.
A strategic portfolio beyond Rietavas
The Rietavas BESS joins a broader slate of strategically significant energy infrastructure work by MT Group. That slate takes in hydrogen projects in Vilnius and Klaipėda, the modernisation of the Jauniūnai gas compressor station, works on a liquefied natural gas terminal in Germany, and a CO₂ capture project in Denmark executed together with Ørsted.
MT Group itself is an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor with operations across Europe, specialising in large-scale energy and industrial infrastructure spanning hydrogen, CO₂ capture, energy storage, natural gas and liquefied natural gas. Its service range extends from concept development and detailed design through to construction, testing and commissioning.
