Austin Energy has finalized a new agreement with Jupiter Power for up to 200 megawatts of battery storage capacity, a utility-scale project expected to enter commercial operation in 2030.
The utility announced the deal on October 28, 2026, saying it will significantly expand the city's local energy storage portfolio and strengthen reliability and price stability for customers.
Two-Hour System Aimed at Price Risk
The agreement covers a 200 MW, two-hour battery system. According to Austin Energy, the system will help protect against and mitigate local wholesale energy price risk and will provide flexible, dispatchable power once it begins commercial operation in 2030.
Under the terms of the arrangement, Austin Energy will not be required to invest in the construction or ongoing maintenance of the project. The utility said the deal reinforces its commitment to building a cleaner, smarter, and more reliable energy future for the Austin community.
Storage Portfolio Reaches 340 MW
With the new project added, Austin Energy's battery storage portfolio will grow to 340 MW of capacity.
That figure exceeds the target in the utility's Resource, Generation, and Climate Protection Plan, which called for studying the feasibility of installing 300 MW of battery storage by 2030.
Second Contract With the Same Developer
The new agreement follows an existing arrangement between the two parties. Jupiter Power already holds a contract with Austin Energy for 100 MW of utility-scale battery storage that is scheduled to come online by the end of 2027.
The two Jupiter Power projects are therefore set to reach operation on different schedules: the earlier 100 MW contract by the end of 2027 and the newly finalized 200 MW system in 2030.
Product of a Technology-Neutral Solicitation
The deal grew out of a procurement process that began in November 2025, when Austin Energy issued an All-Resource Request for Proposals seeking local energy resources across all technology types.
In response to a recent solicitation, Jupiter Power submitted proposals to add further battery facilities at its Austin site, and those proposals led to the newly finalized agreement.
Comments From Austin Energy
Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy General Manager, described the agreement as another major step in the utility's strategy.
"This new agreement with Jupiter Power represents another major step forward in our strategy to enhance reliability, manage risk, and support Austin's energy goals," Reilly said.
"Battery storage is a crucial tool for balancing our grid, and this expanded partnership allows us to deliver economic value and operational flexibility while keeping customer bills stable."
Comments From Jupiter Power
Jack Godshall, Chief Operating Officer of Jupiter Power, said the company was proud to expand its work with Austin Energy and to support the utility's commitment to providing reliable, affordable power to the community.
"Our company's deep roots in Austin make these projects especially meaningful," Godshall said. "We're excited to bring more battery storage to the city and help meet the energy needs of our neighbors."
