St. Marys Cement Partners With Rodan Energy to Deploy 50 MWh Battery Storage System at Bowmanville Plant in Canada

St. Marys Cement Inc. (Canada), a subsidiary of Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA), and Rodan Energy Solutions Inc. have entered a long-term agreement dated October 27, 2026 for a 50 megawatt-hour behind-the-meter battery energy storage system at the cement producer's Bowmanville, Ontario plant.

Once built, the installation will rank as the largest behind-the-meter BESS in Canada.

Rodan to Optimize St. Marys Cement Energy Use

Under the deal's terms, Rodan Energy will develop, own, and operate the storage asset and handle ongoing optimization through its proprietary FlexOps platform.

Rodan carries the development capital and operational risk, while St. Marys Cement receives a fully managed, long-term energy solution without any upfront capital expenditure.

The two companies describe the arrangement as a long-term energy savings partnership intended to deliver economic value, support sustainability goals, and reinforce energy resiliency at one of Canada's largest cement producers.

How the Facility Will Use Stored Power

The batteries will charge during periods of lower electricity demand and discharge when peak demand hits, allowing the Bowmanville plant to trim its grid draw while keeping essential operations running.

Because the system curtails grid consumption at times when electricity carbon intensity tends to be higher, the project also reduces strain on the grid. The installation aligns with VCNA's sustainability roadmap, which includes a commitment to net-zero concrete by 2050 along with interim 2030 targets.

For St. Marys Cement and its parent, the project forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen energy performance, operational resilience, and sustainability performance.

What the Two Chief Executives Said

Paul Grod, President and CEO of Rodan Energy Solutions, said the agreement shows what behind-the-meter BESS can offer large industrial energy users, pointing to real economic savings, a smaller emissions footprint, and client-controlled energy security.

"Rodan owns and operates the asset, so our performance is tied directly to delivering meaningful outcomes for our client," Grod said.

He added that Rodan is building a North American portfolio of comparable projects and is seeking the right C&I partners, financiers, battery manufacturers, and EPCs to grow alongside the company.

Jorge Wagner, President and CEO of Votorantim Cimentos North America, noted that the Bowmanville plant has operated in the community since 1968 and that the company keeps investing in its long-term performance.

"This project brings together energy cost management, operational resilience, and our sustainability roadmap in a practical way," Wagner said.

He explained that by easing grid demand during peak system periods while supporting reliable plant operations, the project embodies Sustainable Legacy, one of the values of Our VC Way, and the company's commitment to lasting value for its operations and communities.

Wagner also said Rodan brings the technical capability, long-term commitment, and operational depth needed to deliver these outcomes over the asset's life.

A First Project With Room to Multiply

The Bowmanville installation is VCNA's first project of this kind and will serve as a foundation for assessing similar opportunities at other VCNA operations. The company frames it as an example of how targeted energy infrastructure can underpin reliable production, cost efficiency, and progress on sustainability commitments.

The plant has been part of Bowmanville since 1968, and VCNA has continued to invest in both the facility and the surrounding community throughout that period.

FlexOps at the Core of the System

The St. Marys project will run on Rodan's FlexOps optimization platform, which presently oversees more than 1,500 MW of distributed energy resources across North America.

That portfolio spans curtailable load, generation, and both grid-connected and behind-the-meter battery storage, serving power producers, utilities, and large energy consumers. According to the announcement, the portfolio is scaling quickly to meet significant demand in North American electricity markets.

Rodan Looks Beyond the Cement Plant

Rodan Energy is actively growing its behind-the-meter BESS portfolio and has invited commercial and industrial energy users seeking long-term energy cost and resiliency solutions to partner with it. The company is likewise seeking involvement from battery manufacturers, EPCs, investors, and financial institutions interested in participating in that expansion.

Beyond those efforts, Rodan reports active discussions with hyperscalers, large-footprint data centre operators, industrial and commercial consumers, electric vehicle fleets, and utilities.

The company says behind-the-meter storage is becoming an increasingly practical answer for these groups as they face power demand growth, grid constraints, and clean energy commitments.

The Companies Behind the Agreement

Rodan Energy Solutions describes itself as a leading North American grid optimizer and energy services company, operating under the tagline Making Sustainable, Attainable. Its FlexOps platform manages upwards of 1,500 MW of distributed energy resources across the continent.

Votorantim Cimentos North America belongs to Votorantim Cimentos, which is among the world's largest building materials and sustainable solutions companies. In North America, VCNA supplies cement, concrete, aggregates, and related building materials for construction, infrastructure, and communities across its markets.

Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the company emphasizes safety, operational excellence, sustainability, and creating long-term value for customers, employees, and stakeholders.

Why the Bowmanville Deal Stands Out

By pairing a structure in which Rodan owns and operates the asset at its own risk with the client's freedom from upfront capital costs, the agreement links the developer's performance directly to the client's outcomes, according to statements from both companies.

The 50 MWh system gives one of Canada's largest cement producers a tool for managing peak electricity demand and maintaining operational resilience while advancing VCNA's decarbonization commitments, including net-zero concrete by 2050 and its 2030 interim goals.

The arrangement establishes the Bowmanville facility as a reference point for behind-the-meter storage deployment among large industrial energy users in Canada.
