AMPYR Australia's Northern Battery project has cleared a pivotal regulatory hurdle after the South Australian Government granted the project its Associated Infrastructure Licence, bringing the 270 MW battery energy storage system a step closer to breaking ground near Port Augusta.
The Associated Infrastructure Licence, referred to as an AIL, is described by AMPYR Australia as the primary South Australian approval required to construct and operate the Northern Battery. Its receipt signals that the project has satisfied a foundational layer of the state's regulatory requirements.
AMPYR Australia made the announcement through its official LinkedIn page, characterising the licence as an important step as the project continues to move toward construction. No specific construction start date or commissioning timeline was disclosed in the company's announcement.
The Northern Battery is planned for the site of the former Northern Power Station near Port Augusta, a location historically associated with coal-fired electricity generation. AMPYR Australia stated that the project will repurpose existing energy infrastructure already present at that site.
According to the company, the battery is intended to support greater integration of renewable energy into the grid while also strengthening the reliability and resilience of South Australia's electricity system. The conversion of legacy thermal generation sites for battery storage use reflects a pattern playing out across multiple locations in Australia as the country's energy transition progresses.
Before the AIL was granted, the Northern Battery had already reached another significant checkpoint in its development. AMPYR Australia confirmed it had received a 5.3.4A letter, which the company identified as a key milestone in the grid connection process.
The back-to-back achievement of the 5.3.4A letter and the AIL indicates the project is working through the sequence of regulatory and connection approvals that typically precede a final investment decision and the commencement of construction for projects operating within South Australia's energy regulatory framework.
AMPYR Australia acknowledged Green Gold Energy as its joint development partner on the Northern Battery project. Beyond that acknowledgement, the company's announcement did not elaborate on the specific responsibilities of each partner or the structural details of the development arrangement between the two organisations. AMPYR Australia also extended thanks to the broader project team as well as the various partners and stakeholders it said have continued to support the project's development.
At 270 MW, the Northern Battery would represent a substantial contribution to South Australia's electricity storage capacity. The state has established itself as a leader in large-scale battery deployment within Australia, having hosted some of the country's earliest and largest grid-scale storage projects.
A project of this size in the Port Augusta region, which has undergone significant energy transition activity following the retirement of its coal generation assets, would add meaningful dispatchable capacity to a grid that carries high proportions of wind and solar generation.
AMPYR Australia's stated purpose for the project is specifically to support that renewable integration and to improve overall system reliability and resilience. No technical specifications beyond the 270 MW capacity figure were included in the company's announcement.
With both the AIL and the 5.3.4A grid connection letter now secured, AMPYR Australia stated it looks forward to advancing the next stages of the Northern Battery as it moves toward construction. The company did not specify what those stages involve or provide any projected timeframes for when construction might begin or when the project could be operational.
