Scotland's Hunterston Battery Project Clears Financial Hurdles With 400 MW Storage Facility Set for 2028

Revera Energy has issued a notice to proceed on its 400 MW / 800 MWh Hunterston Battery Energy Storage System in North Ayrshire, Scotland, after securing financing from four major lenders and locking in a full suite of construction and trading partners. The milestone, announced on 23 September 2026, positions the company to begin construction on what it describes as a strategically vital project at one of the United Kingdom's most stubborn transmission constraints.

A Site Chosen for Its Grid Significance

The Hunterston BESS sits approximately 50 kilometres south-west of Glasgow, north of the B6 boundary — a point Revera identifies as one of the UK's most persistent power grid bottlenecks. The company says the facility will help unlock the transmission constraint that separates Scotland's wind generation capacity from electricity demand centres in England, and it has framed the project as part of its broader contribution to the UK government's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan. Commercial operations are expected in the third quarter of 2028. Revera had announced its final investment decision on the project in June 2026, making the journey from that decision to financial close a matter of months.

Four Banks Provide Non-Recourse Debt

Senior debt financing has been structured on a non-recourse basis, with Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and NatWest each participating as lenders. Revera said it has built the project around a set of investment-grade counterparties spanning construction, equipment supply, and ongoing operations. Sungrow has been contracted to supply the battery energy storage system and will also provide a long-term service agreement. OCU Group is serving as both the Balance of Plant contractor and the operations and maintenance provider. Trading and optimisation responsibilities have been split between two firms: bp will provide a long-term tolling structure, while Danske Commodities will deliver a long-term floor structure. Revera itself will manage both construction oversight and long-term asset management for the project.

Team Highlights: Speed of Execution

Ron Kiecana, Acting Head of Revera UK, described the financing completion as enabling construction of a project he considers critical to the energy transition. "This marks another significant achievement for Revera and a further crucial step in our mission to build a high-quality independent energy platform in the UK and Australia and support the energy transition," Kiecana said. Sam Lewis, Senior Project Manager on the Hunterston BESS, pointed to the pace at which his team had assembled financing and supply chain relationships as a signal of the company's broader capabilities. "Achieving financial close and NTP on Hunterston BESS is a strong indication of our team's ability to recognise quality projects, secure top-tier supply chain relationships and unlock financing in an impressively short period of time," Lewis said, adding that the project sets Revera up well as it moves into execution and continues building its pipeline.

Hunterston Is the Second of Three UK Projects

Revera describes Hunterston as the second in a trio of battery storage projects it is pursuing in the United Kingdom. Its first, the Windyhill BESS rated at 200 MW / 400 MWh, is currently under construction and remains on track to enter commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2027. Hunterston represents Revera's second UK project to reach financial close in 2026. Beyond these two schemes, the company says it holds up to an additional 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of battery storage capacity in the UK with approved planning consents, secured land rights, grid access at NESO Gate 2, and 15-year capacity market contracts already in place. Revera said construction on that additional capacity is proposed to begin in the coming months. Taken together, Revera's UK battery storage portfolio is expected to reach up to 1 GW / 2.8 GWh in total, a scale the company says would make it one of the largest such platforms in Europe. The company also said it is working with leading market advisors to expand the portfolio further.

Progress Continuing in Australia

Revera's activity is not confined to the United Kingdom. The company reported that Stage 1 of its Bungama BESS in Australia, rated at 150 MW / 300 MWh, entered commercial operations during the second quarter of 2026. Revera said it is accelerating development of a 1,000 MW battery storage portfolio in Australia, with Stage 1 of the Robertstown BESS expected to reach financial close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
