A 1 GWh supply agreement between SAMSUNG SDI America (SDIA), the Michigan-based subsidiary of SAMSUNG SDI, and Alpha Omega Power (AOP) will see fully integrated energy storage systems manufactured in Kokomo, Indiana, and delivered before the end of this year.
AOP Battery Storage Contracts Reach 1.5 GWh
AOP, a U.S. utility-scale battery storage developer and independent power producer, signed an initial contract with the company late last year, bringing the combined volume of the two deals to 1.5 GWh.
The systems covered by the new contract will be produced at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in Indiana. AOP intends to use them for large-scale power projects it characterizes as critical for grid reliability and rising power demand, with construction set to start in the WECC and ERCOT power markets next year.
Inside the Samsung Battery Box 1.7
The product at the center of the deal is the Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, which uses high-capacity, high-nickel nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries. The unit delivers 17% higher energy density than the previous SBB 1.5 model while keeping the identical 20-foot footprint.
SAMSUNG SDI has equipped the solution with AI-powered algorithms for early anomaly detection and battery life prediction, drawing on its ESS design experience, and rates it for 25 years of continuous operation.
On safety, the SBB 1.7 holds certifications under NFPA 855, the National Fire Protection Association standard for installing stationary energy storage systems, and UL 9540, an ESS safety standard.
It also features the company's proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) technology, which sends fire-extinguishing agents directly into individual battery modules.
Prismatic Batteries as a Competitive Edge
According to industry analysts, SAMSUNG SDI's recent string of U.S. contract wins owes much to its prismatic battery technology, sold under the PrismStack name, which is recognized for performance and safety.
The company states it is the only non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries in North America and that its prismatic cells provide stronger durability and fire safety than pouch-type alternatives, meeting the demands of U.S. energy companies.
Over the course of this year, SAMSUNG SDI has landed multiple ESS supply contracts with U.S. energy firms and is in ongoing talks with a number of additional local customers, with more orders anticipated soon.
What the Leaders Said
Paul Choi, CEO of Alpha Omega Power, said, "American-made ESS from SAMSUNG SDI will play an important role in AOP's continued growth. This second agreement strengthens our domestic supply chain, supporting the next generation of energy infrastructure."
Fabrice Hudry, President ESS of SAMSUNG SDI America's ESS Team, said, "Alpha Omega Power is one of the fastest-growing independent power producers in the country and the kind of sophisticated operator we want to partner with to tackle grid reliability challenges. With our differentiated technology and local production capabilities, we will continue to expand our business foundation and strengthen our position in the North American ESS market."
A Deepening Partnership Built on Domestic Manufacturing
With every product for the agreement coming out of the SPE plant in Indiana, both companies position the arrangement as a reinforcement of the domestic supply chain underpinning U.S. energy infrastructure.
The deal also reflects the broader build-out of SAMSUNG SDI's North American ESS business at a time when AOP is expanding its storage portfolio across the country, with the supplied systems destined for projects in the WECC and ERCOT markets.
