Battery storage projects developed by Madison Energy Infrastructure for CORE Electric Cooperative have moved from planning into construction, according to an October 26, 2026 announcement from the Denver-based company.
Madison Begins Construction on Colorado Storage Projects
The portfolio totals 50 MW / 200 MWh and is spread across three sites in Colorado, with commercial operations targeted to begin by September 2027. Madison characterized the deployment as the largest distributed energy storage installation in its history to date.
The projects will be equipped with Tesla Megapack technology and rank among the first to draw on Madison's USD 50 million agreement with Tesla, an arrangement designed to give the company dedicated equipment supply as it scales up its storage deployments.
Chris Hildred, Chief Energy Supply Officer at CORE Electric Cooperative, said the shift into construction brings the cooperative nearer to tangible results for its members. "Moving these battery storage projects from planning into construction puts us closer to delivering real benefits for our members," Hildred said.
"As electricity demand grows, this storage will help us manage peak demand, control power costs, and maintain reliable service. We're pleased to take this next step with Madison as we prepare for our communities' future."
Why the Cooperative Is Adding Storage
The batteries are intended to reinforce CORE's distribution infrastructure at a time when the utility is contending with rising electricity consumption across its service territory. Madison's announcement pointed to load growth from new development and wider economic expansion as the forces behind the partnership.
By siting storage on a distributed basis, Madison said, CORE gains a more flexible and cost-effective means of strengthening its system and adapting to changing local energy needs. The cooperative expects the batteries to help manage peak demand, keep power costs under control, and sustain reliable service as consumption climbs.
Madison's Community-First Approach
For Madison, the portfolio sits within its Community Infrastructure initiative, a program aimed at helping communities add capacity, reinforce local energy systems, and get ahead of demand growth driven by data centers, advanced manufacturing, and other forms of economic expansion.
The company said that with dedicated capital and a track record of delivering distributed energy projects across the country, it is focused on bringing storage technology to more communities at scale.
Richard Walsh, CEO of Madison Energy Infrastructure, described the CORE partnership as a reflection of that strategy. "Our partnership with CORE Electric Cooperative exemplifies our Community Infrastructure initiative and commitment to delivering value and benefits close to home," Walsh said.
"Leading municipal utilities and electric cooperatives play a vital role in meeting the moment of increasing demand while prioritizing local businesses and residents. We are proud to work alongside CORE as we deploy community-first energy infrastructure throughout the country."
The company positions itself as modernizing energy for industry and communities, with a portfolio supported by the strength of EQT and its capital partners.
The Players Behind the Projects
CORE Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric utility whose service territory covers a 5,000-square-mile area in central Colorado. It supplies power to more than 375,000 residents along Colorado's Front Range, a footprint that makes it one of the largest electric utility cooperatives in the United States.
Madison Energy Infrastructure describes its mission as modernizing energy for industry and communities, building distributed energy infrastructure at scale amid surging power demand. Media inquiries for the company are being handled by Prosek Partners.
