RWE and Borussia Dortmund have brought a new battery storage system online at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, the home ground of the Bundesliga club BVB.
The system was officially commissioned on 26 October 2026, timed to coincide with the Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Its activation completes the joint energy concept the two partners have developed for the Dortmund stadium.
Solar power available after dark
A central purpose of the new installation is to make the stadium's on-site solar electricity usable around the clock. The battery is linked to the photovoltaic installation on the stadium site, allowing electricity generated there to be drawn on even when the sun is not shining.
RWE describes this coupling of generation and storage as a key advantage of the combined setup. The storage unit itself has a capacity of 3.7 megawatts, which it can deliver for just over an hour at full output.
The stadium roof that anchors the concept
The battery builds on a photovoltaic system that RWE commissioned in December 2025. That installation consists of 11,132 solar modules and has a capacity of more than 5 megawatts peak (MWp).
It sits on the roof of the BVB FanWelt, and RWE has called it the world's most powerful photovoltaic system mounted on a stadium roof. According to the figures provided, the solar system enables BVB to cover up to 45 percent of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK's electricity requirements.
Leadership on both sides of the partnership
Dr. Markus Krebber, Chief Executive of RWE AG, said the commissioning meant the entire system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, comprising the photovoltaic plant and the battery, was now fully operational.
He noted that linking the two systems allows the solar power generated on site to be used even more flexibly, including when the sun is not shining. He added that the experts from BVB and RWE had breathed life and energy into the partnership through the project, describing it as a solid foundation for further joint developments.
Carsten Cramer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Borussia Dortmund, said SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not only the club's iconic home but also a central element of its holistic decarbonisation strategy.
With the battery storage system, he said, the club is working with RWE to complete a forward-looking energy concept that makes its solar power even more usable. He expressed satisfaction that the stadium will continue to stand for resource-efficient and innovative action in the future.
A partnership that extends beyond the hardware
The battery project sits within a broader commercial and strategic relationship. RWE is a "Premium Partner" of BVB and plays a key role in the "BVB Empowers" initiative.
Under the six-year partnership, RWE will continue supporting BVB in optimising the energy management of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The stated objective of this ongoing collaboration is to further increase the stadium's contribution to security of supply, energy efficiency, and decarbonisation.
