Envision Energy has brought online a battery energy storage system at OCP Group's phosphate mining facility in Benguerir, marking the first deployment of large-scale storage technology in Morocco's mining industry and advancing the North African country's push to integrate energy storage into heavy industrial operations.
The Benguerir facility, situated in Morocco's Rehamna Province in the central part of the country, serves as one of OCP Group's principal operational hubs for phosphate extraction and processing. The site also sits adjacent to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, an institution that OCP supports as part of its wider industrial and educational presence in the region.
The battery storage system commissioned there is now operational, delivering storage capacity to an active mining complex that demands consistent and reliable power to sustain continuous production.
OCP Group is recognized as one of the world's largest phosphate producers, and the Benguerir operation sits at the center of Morocco's considerable phosphate reserves. The decision to deploy energy storage at this particular site reflects both its strategic importance to OCP and the energy intensity of phosphate extraction and chemical processing activities.
Shanghai-headquartered Envision Energy supplied the battery technology underpinning the installation. The company is internationally recognized for wind turbine manufacturing and smart energy management systems, and has built a portfolio of large-scale clean energy deployments across multiple continents. The Benguerir project represents an extension of that portfolio into North Africa and adds to Envision's work in markets outside its core Asian base.
The company's involvement in the project went beyond equipment supply. Envision Energy has pursued international expansion through a full-solution model, positioning itself as a provider capable of designing, supplying, and supporting complex energy storage installations across varied operating environments. Integrating a large battery system into the existing energy infrastructure of an active mining site presented engineering and logistical challenges that were addressed through the project development process before commissioning was completed.
The battery energy storage system is designed to operate alongside renewable energy generation at Benguerir, storing power when supply exceeds demand and releasing it during periods of peak consumption or when renewable output varies.
That capability addresses a fundamental challenge for industrial operators relying on solar or wind generation: the intermittency of those sources can disrupt the steady power supply that continuous mining and processing operations require.
By pairing storage with renewable generation, OCP can smooth out variability in its power supply and reduce dependence on conventional grid power. For phosphate operations, which are inherently energy-heavy, securing a reliable and clean energy source is directly tied to both operational continuity and longer-term cost and carbon targets.
The Benguerir deployment fits within OCP Group's stated commitment to shifting its energy mix toward renewables and lowering the carbon intensity of its mining and fertilizer production activities. The company has been pursuing a decarbonization agenda across its operations, and the integration of large-scale battery storage at one of its major sites represents a concrete step in that direction.
Phosphate extraction and the associated chemical processing activities consume substantial quantities of energy, making the sector's transition to cleaner supply sources both technically demanding and commercially significant. Reliable clean energy supply is described as central to OCP's long-term competitiveness as well as its sustainability commitments.
Morocco has built a reputation as one of Africa's most ambitious renewable energy markets. The government has set targets for renewables to account for a major share of national electricity generation, and the country already hosts substantial solar capacity, including the Noor Ouarzazate complex, along with wind installations across its northern and southern regions.
Generation capacity has expanded considerably in recent years. Large-scale battery storage has not kept pace with that generation buildout, however, making the Benguerir project a recognized national first for industrial energy storage.
The installation demonstrates that battery storage at scale is now entering Morocco's mining and heavy industry sectors, complementing the renewable generation assets that have accumulated over the past decade. For the country's industrial operators, the project provides evidence that large-scale storage is technically and commercially viable within a Moroccan mining context.
The project carries significance beyond Morocco's borders. Africa holds an outsized share of global mineral wealth, and mining companies operating across both North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa have been working to reduce diesel dependency and limit grid exposure by bringing renewable energy and storage systems into their site power infrastructure. Large-scale battery storage has been slower to arrive in African mining contexts than renewable generation itself.
The Benguerir installation now provides a reference case for what is achievable in the region, and could influence decisions by other mining operators considering similar configurations elsewhere on the continent. Envision Energy's role in delivering the project also signals the company's intent to grow its presence in African energy storage markets, using the OCP partnership and the distinction of executing Morocco's first large-scale industrial battery deployment as a foundation for further expansion.
The collaboration between the two companies reflects a pattern seen more broadly across Africa and the Middle East, where Chinese clean energy technology firms have secured major project partnerships by offering integrated solutions rather than standalone equipment supply.
