A 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System planned at the NTPC Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra, India, is back on the market.
NTPC has re-issued the tender for the project, with a bid submission deadline of October 22, 2026, after cancelling the original award that had gone to GR Infraprojects.
The earlier contract, valued at USD 42.77 million, was signed in March 2026 and carried a 15-month completion timeline. NTPC scrapped it on the grounds that GR Infraprojects did not fulfill its contractual obligations, failed to take immediate corrective measures, and could not achieve the required progress on the works.
The new tender process is being carried out at the risk and cost of GR Infraprojects, consistent with the applicable contractual provisions. NTPC has stated that the re-tendering is aimed at securing the early re-award of the contract and ensuring the project is executed on time.
The work package is comprehensive. Bidders are required to supply and install the battery system along with the Battery Management System, Energy Management System, supervisory control and data acquisition system, and the Power Conversion System.
Protection and communication systems, together with high-tension and low-tension infrastructure, also fall within the scope.
Beyond the core equipment, the tender covers auxiliary power supply, fire detection and protection systems, remote control and monitoring facilities, and the various materials and accessories needed for the reliable operation and maintenance of the storage system.
The selected bidder must additionally handle interconnection of the BESS with the existing facilities at the thermal power station.
Long-term support is built into the contract structure. The award includes a Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract running for 11 years, starting from the successful completion of the Performance Guarantee Test.
This arrangement is intended to keep the storage facility operating reliably well after it is commissioned.
The Mouda project sits within NTPC's wider programme of building battery storage capacity alongside its conventional generation assets. The company is pursuing storage developments at multiple locations, a strategy driven by growing renewable generation and the resulting need for grid balancing and flexibility services.
With bids now open until October 22, 2026, NTPC is looking for a rapid re-award so that the Mouda BESS can proceed without further delay following the termination of the original contract.
