Northland Power Inc. has declared its Jurassic Battery Energy Storage System commercially operational, giving Alberta its largest battery storage facility. The company, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol NPI, made the announcement from Toronto on September 29, 2026.
The facility provides 80 MW of power and 160 MWh of energy capacity for grid-balancing in the province. Northland said the project was finished ahead of schedule and under budget, and described the result as another milestone in its project delivery record. Jurassic is the company's second storage project.
The Jurassic system is backed by a 15-year offtake agreement covering 100 percent of its capacity. Northland stated that the arrangement gives the project long-term contracted cash flows. The announcement did not name the counterparty or disclose pricing terms, and it gave neither the capital cost of the project nor the size of the budget savings.
According to Northland, construction of the Jurassic BESS was completed with zero lost-time incidents over nearly 75,000 hours worked. The company presented the safety result alongside the schedule and budget outcomes as evidence of how the project was delivered. Christine Healy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northland Power, linked the commissioning to the company's wider capabilities.
"Achieving commercial operations at Jurassic BESS demonstrates Northland's ability to consistently deliver energy infrastructure safely, efficiently, and as planned," Healy said. She added that the project "highlights our exceptional project execution and multi-technology capabilities and operations across electricity generation and storage."
Northland describes itself as a Canadian-headquartered global power producer that supplies electricity through offshore wind, onshore renewables, battery storage and natural gas-fired generation. It has offices in seven countries and owns, in whole or in part, 3.6 GW of gross operating generating capacity.
A further 2.4 GW is under construction, and the company reports a development pipeline of approximately 8 GW. Northland says this reflects nearly four decades of experience delivering large-scale energy infrastructure.
The company has been publicly traded since 1997. Its common shares, along with Series 1 and Series 2 Preferred Shares, trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbols NPI, NPI.PR.A and NPI.PR.B, respectively.
The release carries a standard notice on forward-looking information. Northland said statements on matters such as expectations for the operating capacity of the project and the size of its development pipeline may turn out differently from what it has stated. It noted that those statements rest on material factors and assumptions, including the provisions of contracts to which Northland or a subsidiary is a party, and are subject to numerous risks and uncertainties.
Readers were directed to the Risk Factors section of the company's Management's Discussion and Analysis and its Annual Information Form for the year ended December 31, 2025, both available on SEDAR+ and on the Northland website. The company cautioned against placing undue reliance on forward-looking statements and said it undertakes no obligation to update them except as required by law.
Northland named Alison Holditch, Head of Investor Relations, and Victor Gravili, Vice President of Corporate Affairs, as the contacts for further information. The company's news page also points to other recent items, including its second quarter 2026 results and construction progress updates, as well as a separate announcement about debt financing at the Hai Long Offshore Wind Project.
