Macurco in US Unveils HD-6 Hydrogen Detector With 10-Year Sensor for BESS and Data Center Safety

Macurco Inc., the fixed gas detection specialist within the DwyerOmega brand portfolio, introduced the HD-6 Hydrogen Gas Detector on September 29, 2026, in an announcement issued from the company's Sioux Falls, South Dakota, location.

Flagship GD-6 Detector Gets a Successor Built for Battery Storage Risks

The device is intended for continuous hydrogen monitoring in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installations and other critical settings where hydrogen detection is required.

The new unit is positioned as an evolution of the company's existing flagship hydrogen detector, the GD-6. Jonathon DeKam, Macurco Line Product Manager for DwyerOmega, cited substantial improvements in the HD-6, including reduced maintenance needs, resistance to silicone poisoning, added alarm setpoints, and a 10-year lifespan.

DeKam explained that the HD-6 came about in response to repeated customer requests for a hydrogen detector offering greater robustness, higher reliability, and longer field life.

Safety Role of Hydrogen Monitoring in Energy Storage

Hydrogen monitoring serves a dual purpose in BESS environments: it safeguards personnel and tracks normal equipment operation. A malfunctioning battery can emit hydrogen gas, potentially creating explosive and hazardous conditions.

Detecting hydrogen early can flag fault events, limit further equipment damage, and alert staff to dangerous surroundings. The HD-6 delivers continuous hydrogen monitoring and early warning to help protect people, equipment, and facilities.

Its robust, low-maintenance construction is engineered for long-term performance in demanding applications such as data centers, BESS facilities, and industrial hydrogen monitoring.

UL and CE Certifications Back European and North American Availability

The HD-6 carries UL Listing to UL 2075 and CAN/ULC 588, along with a CE mark.

According to Macurco, these certifications reflect demanding electrical safety, performance, and gas detection requirements, evidencing the unit's electrical integrity, accurate hydrogen response, and dependable operation. The CE marking opens the door to availability in the European market.

DeKam stressed the weight of the certification, noting that the UL 2075 listing for hydrogen gas detection gives customers confidence in relying on the HD-6 across data centers, BESS facilities, or any application where hydrogen detection is imperative.

He added that Macurco looks forward to placing the HD-6 in customers' hands and gathering feedback to inform future product refinements.

Alarm Relays, BMS Integration, and a 0-50% LEL Sensor Range

The detector offers two configurable alarm levels with relay activation, enabling automated responses such as triggering fans, valves, louvers, horns, and strobes. Local audible alarms, bright visual indicators, and analog communication come standard, allowing seamless integration with Building Management Systems (BMS).

Among the detector's listed capabilities are the 10-year sensor life, UL 2075 and CAN/ULC 588 listing, minimal maintenance demands, and silicone poisoning resistance.

The sensor measures hydrogen across a 0-50% LEL range, and the unit includes a 5A SPDT fan relay plus a 0.5A alarm relay, with an LED display for at-a-glance gas concentration readings.

A 4-20 mA output supports VFD control and BMS integration, while end-of-life notification, compatibility with Macurco digital control panels, mounting on standard 4×4 electrical boxes, and operation from 12 to 24 VAC or 12 to 32 VDC round out the specifications.
