Valo, the global battery energy storage integrator formed as a joint venture between Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions, has secured its first major assignment shortly after launching. The company announced that it will deliver the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Teebar Battery Energy Storage System for Atmos Renewables in Queensland, Australia.
The award comes just days after Valo's own launch, positioning Teebar as a significant early milestone for the new venture. The project also ranks among the largest battery energy storage schemes currently committed for construction in the state.
The facility will be built in the Fraser Coast region, adjacent to the Teebar Creek Substation. Valo states the system will strengthen grid stability and support the growing integration of renewable energy across the National Electricity Market (NEM). Commercial operation is expected in late 2028.
Under Australia's Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), a government initiative aimed at accelerating investment in reliable clean energy infrastructure, projects must meet demanding performance, reliability and social license requirements. Valo will support Atmos Renewables in meeting those obligations.
In addition, Teebar BESS has already obtained Generator Performance Standards (GPS) approval for grid-forming operation in the NEM. Valo says the approval reflects its experience delivering advanced grid-forming energy storage technology that underpins system strength, grid stability and renewable integration.
The project will deploy Valo's GridSolve Quantum2 energy storage system together with its GEMS software, pairing intelligent energy management with advanced power plant control to optimise performance, meet grid requirements and maximise asset value.
The technology scope is paired with a long-term service agreement covering performance and availability guarantees, maintenance, remote operational support, software updates and performance monitoring.
Suraj Narayan, Managing Director Australia at Valo, said Atmos Renewables is building a portfolio of strategically located renewable energy assets to support Australia's energy transition, and that Valo is proud to back that vision with proven technology and delivery expertise.
He called Australia one of the world's most advanced energy storage markets and described Teebar BESS as another important step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy system. Narayan also noted that Valo's experience delivering and commissioning grid-scale battery projects across the NEM, together with its record through grid connection and hold point testing, gives developers confidence that projects can be delivered safely, reliably and on schedule.
Nigel Baker, CEO of Atmos Renewables, said Teebar BESS is an important project for the company that will play a significant role in supporting Queensland's growing renewable energy system while delivering long-term benefits for the local community.
He added that as the project moves into construction, the company is pleased to partner with Valo, whose experience on large-scale battery storage projects will help ensure Teebar is built to a high standard and positioned as a quality long-term project for all stakeholders.
With Teebar included, Valo's Australian energy storage portfolio now exceeds 7.6 GWh. The company says the expansion reflects the trust customers place in its technology, its NEM grid experience and its record of delivering utility-scale storage projects across Australia.
According to the announcement, as renewable generation expands across Australia, large-scale battery storage systems are increasingly underpinning grid reliability, flexibility and resilience while enabling greater levels of renewable energy integration. Valo operates in Australia, Europe, Asia and the Americas, has delivered more than 130 utility-scale energy storage projects worldwide, and builds systems that combine advanced hardware, intelligent software, engineering expertise and end-to-end lifecycle services.
