Flatiron Energy has secured contracts from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for two large-scale battery energy storage facilities in the Bronx, the company announced on October 21, 2026.
The awards for Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage came through New York State's first-ever Bulk Energy Storage solicitation, a competitive process that selected eight lithium-ion projects in total.
New York's Energy Storage Initiative to Boost Capacity and Jobs
Once fully operational, the eight projects chosen statewide are expected to add roughly 950 MW of new storage capacity to New York's electric grid.
NYSERDA estimates that the inaugural solicitation will drive more than USD 1.6 billion in private investment and create more than 500 short- and long-term jobs across the selected portfolio.
Flatiron Positions Both Facilities for New York City Grid Needs
Flatiron stated that it deliberately sited Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage to bolster the reliability of New York City's electric grid. The company says the facilities are designed to help residents lower electricity costs, keep power available when demand is high, and cut dependence on fossil-fueled peaking units.
NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris welcomed the selection. "I congratulate Flatiron Energy and applaud the role Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage will play in providing capacity to New York City's electricity network during peak periods," Harris said. "These energy storage projects are critical to improving the reliability of New York's grid, reducing costs for ratepayers, and deploying clean energy to meet the State's growing power needs."
Flatiron Leadership Hails Dual Selection
Juliana Mandell, the company's Chief Commercial Officer, called the selection of both projects a significant moment for Flatiron. "We are extremely proud to have two projects selected in New York's first bulk energy storage solicitation," Mandell said. "These awards mark an important milestone for Flatiron and reflect our commitment to developing energy storage infrastructure that strengthens the electric grid and benefits local communities. We look forward to developing these projects alongside NYSERDA and our local partners."
Awards Advance New York's 6 GW by 2030 Storage Goal
The contracts support New York State's push to build out energy storage capacity and strengthen grid resiliency as it works toward deploying 6 GW of storage by 2030. With Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage, Flatiron will contribute capacity toward that statewide target.
Fire Safety Standards Apply to All Selected Projects
Every NYSERDA-supported storage project, including the two Flatiron facilities, must meet New York's rigorous fire safety requirements.
Those standards encompass first-responder training, safe siting practices, and comprehensive emergency response plans.
Operational Targets Hinge on Permitting and Local Approvals
Flatiron plans to bring both Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium Storage online before the end of 2030. That timeline remains contingent on obtaining required permits, local approvals, and meeting safety requirements.
Company Background
Flatiron Energy describes itself as a provider of safe and reliable energy solutions aimed at improving grid reliability, reducing ratepayer costs, and supporting communities as energy demand grows.
The company develops, owns, and operates utility-scale energy storage projects and says its team draws on multiple decades of experience in storage development, structuring, and asset optimization.
