A 125 MW / 300 MWh standalone battery energy storage system taking shape in Lapinlahti, Finland, will be optimized and traded by Centrica Energy after the company signed a partial tolling agreement with Delta Capacity and Covenergo for the AKKU One project.
The deal is the second partial tolling agreement struck between Centrica Energy and Delta Capacity in Finland within a single month, following the same structure recently agreed for the 125 MW / 300 MWh Karppio BESS project.
Taken together with Centrica Energy's optimisation role on Delta Capacity's 70 MW / 160 MWh Ånge BESS in Sweden, the companies describe the arrangement as evidence of a fast-growing Nordic flexibility partnership. Under the partial tolling structure, the AKKU One project secures revenues while retaining merchant upside.
Centrica Energy will manage the asset across Nordic power markets, drawing on its 24/7 trading and multi-market optimisation capabilities to capture value in wholesale, balancing and ancillary service markets. For Covenergo, which owns and develops the project, the agreement marks a milestone for its portfolio of flexible assets and strengthens its strategic presence in the Nordic energy market.
Commissioning of AKKU One is planned for Q4 2027. Once operational, the battery will provide flexibility to Finland's power system, supporting frequency regulation, balancing requirements and the continued integration of renewable generation.
The announcement situates the project in a market where battery storage is becoming increasingly significant. Finland's power system is among the cleanest in Europe and continues to see rapid growth in renewable generation, particularly wind power.
According to the company, as more renewable capacity comes online, battery storage plays an increasingly important role in maintaining system stability, balancing supply and demand, and enabling more efficient use of renewable energy.
Cassim Mangerah, Managing Director at Centrica Energy, said AKKU One is the company's third battery storage project with Delta Capacity and lifts the battery capacity it optimises together across the Nordics to more than 400 MW. He noted that as power systems become increasingly shaped by renewable generation, flexible assets such as battery storage play a critical role in balancing supply and demand and creating value from market volatility.
The project, he added, strengthens Centrica Energy's asset-backed trading business in the Nordics. František Kalivoda, CEO of Covenergo, described AKKU One as a flagship project in the company's growing BESS portfolio. He said the agreement reflects Covenergo's ability to originate, develop and structure large-scale, bankable energy storage projects, and that with Centrica's trading and optimisation expertise, AKKU One is well positioned to maximise its long-term value while contributing to the flexibility of Finland's energy system.
Patrik Hes, CEO of Delta Capacity, said that signing two tolling agreements with Centrica Energy in Finland within a single month shows the pace at which the company is scaling its Nordic platform. He said Centrica Energy brings proven trading expertise and a strong track record in Nordic power markets, and that with Covenergo's ownership and development of AKKU One, the agreement gives the project a clear, well-supported route to market.
